VIPs of the Past - Alexander Graham Bell

Image
On Tuesday, Tigers learnt about another VIP of the past. They learnt about Alexander Graham Bell and how is work with deaf people helped him to understand hearing through vibrations which led to him inventing the telephone.  The children then made their own telephones, using plastic cups and string. They understood that the string had to be tight for the vibrations to travel down it effectively.

VIPs of the Past - Edward Jenner

Image
On Monday, Tigers learnt about the doctor and scientist, Edward Jenner. We learnt about how he discovered that cow pox could be used to protect against small pox. They understood that this was the discovery of vaccinations.  We used Participation Theatre to retell the story. In participation theatre, our audience responded to different characters and words with actions.  Our retelling went like this: A long time ago there was a disease called small pox. There was no cure and people died. This is Edward Jenner. Edward Jenner is a doctor. He wants to cure small pox. This is Sarah. She is a milkmaid. Do we know what a milkmaid does? (Wait for the children to respond). That’s right. Come on Daisy, we need a cow to milk. One day Sarah was milking Daisy. When she looked at her hands, Sarah found she had lots of spots on them. The spots were called cow pox. The spots itched a lot. Sarah went to see her doctor, Edward Jenner. She asked if he would put cream on her cow pox. Edwar...

Representing the Christian Creation Story

This week, they worked in teams to represent each part of the story.  The children have been exploring what this story means to Christians, reminding them about what God is like, and feeling grateful for the wonders of the world we live in. We thought about how this story might inspire people to be creative, or to care for the Earth and its creatures, or to study the world in order to understand it better. Many Christians see the story as a poem. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth. (Genesis 1:1) In the beginning there was no earth or sky or sea or animals.  And then God spoke in the darkness:  "Let there be light!"  And right away there was light, scattering the darkness and showing the infinite space.  "That's good!" said God.  "From now on, when it's dark it will be 'night' and when it's light, it will be 'day'." The evening c...

VIPs of the past - Mozart

Image
As part of our topic, VIPs of the past, Tigers class learnt about the composer, Mozart. They listened to some very different pieces of music that he composed and reflected on how each one made them feel. They then explored a range of tuned and untuned instruments aiming to represent different emotions with their music. We focused particularly on tempo.
