Y1 Stinky Maths

Image
This morning, year 1s were recapping counting in 2s and 5s. To count in 2s, we took off our shoes and socks (stinky!) and laid them in a line in pairs to help us with our counting. To count in 5s, we used our hands and feet, raising 5 fingers or toes up at a time.

Claiming things with possessive apostrophes

Image
On Tuesday, Tigers were learning how to use possessive apostrophes. We decided to choose our favourite items from around the classroom and claim them with labels, using the skill we had learnt.

Year 2 Working with parts and wholes

Image
On Monday, Year 2 took our Maths lesson outside. We were looking at parts and wholes, including equal and unequal groups.  First, the children were given certain amounts of cubes and asked to split the whole number into parts. They were given instructions such as 'split your cubes into 4 equal groups', and asked to investigate questions such as 'how many different ways can you split this number into equal groups?'  Next, the children were given squares of paper and asked to investigate how many different ways they could split the paper into 2 equal parts. We then moved on to 4 equal parts. Finally, the children were given Numicon and asked to investigate how many different ways they could make each number, splitting it into equal or unequal parts.

Year 1 Volume and Capacity

Image
On Monday, the year 1s had their maths lesson outside, learning about the terms 'volume' and 'capacity'. First, the children were asked to transfer water from a large tub to another large tub, using only spoons. The children were very patient but they didn't even come close to completing the task.  We talked about the size of the tubs vs the size of the spoons and introduced the word capacity. They decided that a tub with a smaller capacity would be easier to fill, so that's what we tried. Success! We then put the big tub back and the children decided that, in order to fill it, they needed something with a bigger capacity than their spoons. Alfie chose cups.  Quick success! We then put varying amounts of water into different containers and introduced the word 'volume'. The children had to decide which rub had the greatest volume of water in it. Some of these were trickier to decide than others. We measured the volume of water to check our predictions.

Careers afternoon - BBC Radio 2

Image
On Wednesday afternoon, Tigers, Leopards and Giraffes had a special opportunity to interview Dan Markham, a Producer at BBC Radio 2. The children had so many questions and were excited to find out about the world of radio and how to get into a career in that area. Dan showed us around the radio studio, talked about the different jobs that people do there and demonstrated some of the technology that they use.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/proginfo/2018/20/oj-borg

Easter Sunday

Image
Today, Tigers and Bears learnt about Jesus’ resurrection and why Easter is such an important celebration for Christians. We then went up to the woods for a fire, symbolising Jesus as Light of the World.
