Alien hunters

We explore ‘alien’ (or nonsense) words in our phonics sessions to practice sounding out. Lots of sneaky alien words were hidden around our classroom and the children had to hunt them down. Once the aliens had all been captured, the children sounded out all of their alien words to their partner. The person who had captured the most words read their words to the class and won a prize. The children enjoyed being alien hunters so much that we played this game 3 times, meaning lots of wonderful phonics!
