Year 2 Working with parts and wholes

On Monday, Year 2 took our Maths lesson outside. We were looking at parts and wholes, including equal and unequal groups.

First, the children were given certain amounts of cubes and asked to split the whole number into parts. They were given instructions such as 'split your cubes into 4 equal groups', and asked to investigate questions such as 'how many different ways can you split this number into equal groups?'

Next, the children were given squares of paper and asked to investigate how many different ways they could split the paper into 2 equal parts. We then moved on to 4 equal parts.

Finally, the children were given Numicon and asked to investigate how many different ways they could make each number, splitting it into equal or unequal parts.
