Our school trip to Lower Plumpton Farm

  Wow, what an exciting day!

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Lower Plumpton Farm this morning. The children were given the opportunity to explore the farm and see the animals in their different environments. We learnt about: life cycles, plants, food chains and habitats.

First, we went to the milking parlor to watch the cows being milked. David (the farmer) demonstrated cleaning the cow's teats before putting the clusters on. We watched the milk go through the pipes into the dairy, where the milk tank was stored.

Next, we visited the sheep and new calf shed. The children saw the sheep with their lambs, cade lambs as well as the young calves and were given the opportunity to stroke them.

After this, we went to see the young stock. The children fed the young heifers- giving each pen 3 buckets of corn. The children worked really well as a team to distribute the corn.

The children also saw some of the young beef cows and Amy explained to the children about the different breeds of cows they have on the farm and what they're used for.

Then, we headed to a paddock, to see the ewes with their lambs and the hens. The children watched the hens being let out and were given the opportunity to collect the eggs and explore the hen house.

The children also enjoyed jumping over the horse jumps, pretending to be horses.

During this time, a cow had calved so we popped over to see it with it's mother. The calf was only 10 minutes old!

Finally, Amy fetched the horses for the children to stoke before we washed our boots and got back on the coach to come home.
