Life in the 1950s
Today, the Tigers have explored through role-play what it would have been like to live in the 1950s.
Many
men worked in coal mines, factories, and shipyards in the 1950s. These jobs
were hard and dangerous. Today the Tigers were put to work in the paper chain
factory!

Marbles was a popular game!
Washing machines, electric irons,
hot water boilers and vacuum cleaners all became popular in the 1950s. These
appliances saved time and made washing and cleaning easier.
We found out that supermarkets were
still quite new in the 1950s. They were different from other shops because they
sold many different things!
After
having children, most women became housewives and they stayed at home to look
after their house and children. Housewives cooked and cleaned. They also went
shopping and made clothes.
Rock and roll music started in the 1950s
so we learnt a rock and roll dance as many teenagers and children would do this
in dance halls on the weekends.
We watched a popular tv programme
from the 1950s called ‘Muffin the Mule’ we said that this was different as it
was in black and white.
Children left school at 15 and some
delivered papers to earn pocket money.
We went outside and played popular
children’s games like hopscotch as in the 1950s Children played out in the
streets together because there wasn’t much traffic on the roads.
