Code breakers

Image
This morning the Tigers and Bears were challenged to crack special codes in order to find the hidden treasure. They were given mathematical problems to solve. Once they had solved each puzzle they could work out the letters for the next clue.  The children were fantastic, I was particularly impressed with their ability to work together in pairs as well as the way they persevered to crack the challenging codes. Well done infants, you're super stars! Problem solving  Finding the next clue   Finding the treasure!

All About Me art

Image
At the start of this year, Tigers children created a piece of artwork to express a little bit about themselves. The children are now working on a similar piece to bookend the year, highlighting any changes or recognising those things that about themselves that have deep roots. Here are a few of the pieces finished so far. These have been completely independent.

Pirate land art

Image
This afternoon we looked at some of the work of the artist Andy Goldsworthy. The children were given the challenge to create their own topic themed land art using natural materials, like Andy’s. They worked in groups, firstly, deciding what to create, then collecting the appropriate materials needed to make their land art. They had some fantastic ideas and worked really well in groups to create their masterpieces.  Collecting their materials. Working together. The Bears enjoying playing in their fishing boat. Pirate ship and island. Parrot and trees. Enjoying their pirate ship. Another great afternoon! Well done.

Making equal groups

Image
We have been learning how to group objects equally. We discussed the terms ‘equal’ and ‘unequal’ before finding a given number of objects around the field and sharing the quantity equally into a certain number of groups. We were also able to draw upon our knowledge of counting and skip counting to check ours answers. We also investigated and discussed the numbers that we couldn’t share equally between certain groups. The children showed a good understanding of making equal groups and it was wonderful to see how they applied their other knowledge to help them solve the problems. Great stuff.

Pirate ships and rocket ships

Image
This afternoon, Tigers and Bears worked in teams to design and make a form of transportation out of a large box. Bears had been looking at the story ‘The Dinosaur that Pooped a Planet’ so they made a rocket ship. Year 1s liked the idea of a rocket ship but wanted to make it piratey to fit with our topic, so see if you can spot one peeping out of the window! Year 2s decided on a pirate ship. They all worked so well together and made some fantastic creations, having lots of fun the process.  Another great afternoon!  Mrs C

Potions

Image
During forest school this afternoon, we read part of a story about a women who lived in a vinegar bottle. The women was very unhappy so a kind fairy said she would help her. We paused the story there and the children suggested making potions to help the unhappy women. Their imaginations ran wild, thinking of ideas for how the potion would work. Some children also made a new house for the women with a garage and walled garden to keep out any vicious animals. Later, we shared our recipes and how they could help the women. I was so thrilled with their creative ideas and thoughtfulness towards someone in need. Oscar’s mashing his ingredients. Construction of  new house made from a tree stump, bark, rocks, sticks and leaves. It has been such a lovely afternoon, well done everyone. I hope you have a super weekend. Miss F

Natural treasure book marks

Image
Yesterday we wandered off through the village, collecting things of interest to add to our very own bookmarks. The children were full of enthusiasm, finding a wide variety of wild flowers, interesting grasses, ferns, seeds and leaves. They were able to identify many of the plants they found and we researched anything unfamiliar on our return. We managed to walk up to five wells, where, like last week the children were able to enjoy lovely views of our surrounding area (as well as quick go on the slide as we passed).  Saying hello to the sheep and her now rather large lambs. Enjoying singing the sea shanties they learnt earlier in the week as they walked. Beautifully arranged natural bookmarks, ready to be laminated and put to good use. What a fantastic bunch you all are, a thoroughly enjoyable time together. Miss F
