Whittling sticks to toast marshmellows

Image
We’ve had a wonderful afternoon! The infants have really impressed me by the way they’ve demonstrated many of our school values during our session. I loved how they worked together, coaching one another and giving feedback whilst whittling their sticks. Whittling is a tricky skill but the way they listened and reacted to feedback meant that everyone successfully managed to take off the bark from the stick and create a pointy end for the marshmallow to stab onto. Once we had all whittled a stick, we had a fire and sat around the fire circle and enjoyed hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows together.

Creating a school garden

Image
Over the last couple of days, some of our children have been helping to dig over a patch of our field to create a school garden. We hope to do some planting in here after half term for our children to look after and maintain.  The children have worked so well together and really loved taking ownership of this project.

Celebrating Black History Month

Tigers have loved learning about African tribes over the last couple of weeks and discovering the purpose of the masks that they use at celebrations. The children have been enormously enthusiastic about making their own tribal masks, choosing the ‘spirit’ of their masks, designing them then making and decorating them. We can’t wait to share them with you at our exhibition next week.  We have also been learning about the lives of important black people such as Mary Seacole and Rosa Parks. The children have been incredibly engaged and have had mature and caring discussions.

Ordinal numbers and Counting in 3s

Image
In maths this morning, the Year 1s were working on ordinal numbers. We had car races and decided who came 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. Learning the different ways these words are represented can be tricky so it would be great if you could practice these at home as well. I would love to see what you get up to! The year 2s moved on to counting in 3s. We made pyramids out of triangles to help support our learning. Please take any opportunity at home to practice counting in 3s or spotting groups of 3.

Hot-seating and Tableaux

This morning, we reminded ourselves of the story we started last week, ‘Jim and the Beanstalk’. The children retold the story in their own words, taking it in turns to tell the next part. Some of the children then had chance to come to our ‘hot-seats’ at the front where they became our characters (Jim or the Giant) and answered questions from the class. We had some very scary giants!  We discussed how the characters might be feeling at key points in the story, then the children had the chance to demonstrate these feelings through tableaus. The children showed that they had really thought about the changing feelings of the characters throughout the story.
