Materials - Sorting the Magic Toymaker's toys

Image
Upon entering the classroom, Tigers found all of the toys from the Magic Toymaker's workshop piled up in the middle of the carpet. We had received a message from the Magic Toymaker asking the children to help him sort the toys. I asked the children how we might do that and they started naming materials. We labelled some hoops with the materials that we could spot then the children started to sort the toys into them. Some great discussions took place!   Question:  Is the yoyo made of metal? Answer:  We tapped the materials to check for similarities or differences in the way they sound. We concluded that, despite the colour of the yoyo suggesting it was metal, it was actually made of plastic. Question: Is bamboo wood? Answer: "Bamboo is not wood, but a grass with no woody material in its stem.'

Super authors

I was incredibly proud of my Tigers on Tuesday. Last week, they wrote some amazing stories based on Oliver Jeffers' Lost and Found. They wanted to share their stories with the rest of the school so that's what they did in our Collective Worship this week.  Completely planned and led by the children, it was a wonderful celebration of their hard work. Nobody was pressured into reading their stories in front of the school (which is a big deal!) but just look how many of our class chose to do so! Wow! Those that didn't want to, filmed their story-telling instead, and these will be sent around to the other classes so that they can listen to them during their story times. I'm incredibly proud of every member of the class for their fantastic stories, as well as their enthusiasm for sharing them in whichever way they chose to do so. Children's Mental Health Week Workshop

Image
We were very lucky today to welcome Lorna Wilkinson into school to run workshops for Children's Mental Health Week. The infants loved thinking about what they would like to do to grow as a person, and who could help them to achieve their goal. We drew around our hands and wrote our goals on them, listing the people that could help us on each finger. We stuck our hands on a tree, showing how we can grow together and help each other. The children then each got to choose an inspirational quote card to take home to remind themselves of how important and special they are. Thank you so much, Lorna for an uplifting afternoon.

Toys through time - shop window art

Image
As part of our Magical Toys topic, Tigers have been looking at how toys have changed over time. As well as bringing in their own toys to share and discuss, the children also brought in toys from when their parents and grandparents were young. They have had some fantastic discussions about how the toys have changed, including inventions that have had a dramatic effect on the toys available.  The children have now applied all of this History knowledge to a special piece of art. They looked at  The Toy Shop   by Peter Blake (1962), which depicts a toy shop window, for inspiration for their artwork. They then used their historical knowledge of toys, and examples of the toys they had shared, to make each window pane celebrate a different era of toys.  Top left: Grandparent's toys.  Top right: Parent's toys.
