Wormery fun

Image
We have been learning all about worms this afternoon and the important role they play- helping to decompose matter and cleaning soil. We also found out some of their interesting features that help them to survive.  Together in the woods, we made a wormery so that we can continue to observe them and understand them more. The children really enjoyed putting the wormery together- putting layers of soil, sand and leaves then wetting the soil and of course looking for worms to add to it.

Super Me - Entry point to our new topic

Image
On returning to school after half term, Tigers class discovered that part of our classroom had been made into a Science Lab. On Monday, we were introduced to our new topic, Super Me! This half term we will be Scientists, exploring how our bodies work.  Here, the boys are exploring how our ears work, using tubing and funnels. Williams is squeezing the tube to show what can happen if you have a problem with your ear. James is learning about our internal organs and where they are in our bodies.

A Mystery Bear

Image
On Tuesday, Tigers class found a little bear in our classroom. It was sitting on a picnic blanket with a bucket and spade. The children looked at clues and discussed their thoughts about what we'd found. The children deduced that the bear was old and we talked about how special items are sometimes passed down through members of a family. We learnt about family trees to help our understanding.  The children spotted that the bear had some initials on its foot and we talked about how labels can help to identify a bear, thinking about some famous bears that we know such as Paddington. The children were each then given a teddy to write a label for. We worked on making our writing as perfect as possible, including capital letters for names and ensuring we were applying all of the spelling rules that we know.

VIPs of the Past - Alexander Graham Bell

Image
On Tuesday, Tigers learnt about another VIP of the past. They learnt about Alexander Graham Bell and how is work with deaf people helped him to understand hearing through vibrations which led to him inventing the telephone.  The children then made their own telephones, using plastic cups and string. They understood that the string had to be tight for the vibrations to travel down it effectively.

VIPs of the Past - Edward Jenner

Image
On Monday, Tigers learnt about the doctor and scientist, Edward Jenner. We learnt about how he discovered that cow pox could be used to protect against small pox. They understood that this was the discovery of vaccinations.  We used Participation Theatre to retell the story. In participation theatre, our audience responded to different characters and words with actions.  Our retelling went like this: A long time ago there was a disease called small pox. There was no cure and people died. This is Edward Jenner. Edward Jenner is a doctor. He wants to cure small pox. This is Sarah. She is a milkmaid. Do we know what a milkmaid does? (Wait for the children to respond). That’s right. Come on Daisy, we need a cow to milk. One day Sarah was milking Daisy. When she looked at her hands, Sarah found she had lots of spots on them. The spots were called cow pox. The spots itched a lot. Sarah went to see her doctor, Edward Jenner. She asked if he would put cream on her cow pox. Edwar...

Representing the Christian Creation Story

Image
Y1 and Y2 have been learning about the Christian Creation story this half term. This week, they worked in teams to represent each part of the story.  The children have been exploring what this story means to Christians, reminding them about what God is like, and feeling grateful for the wonders of the world we live in. We thought about how this story might inspire people to be creative, or to care for the Earth and its creatures, or to study the world in order to understand it better. Many Christians see the story as a poem. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth. (Genesis 1:1) In the beginning there was no earth or sky or sea or animals.  And then God spoke in the darkness:  "Let there be light!"  And right away there was light, scattering the darkness and showing the infinite space.  "That's good!" said God.  "From now on, when it's dark it will be 'night' and when it's light, it will be 'day'." The evening c...
