‘Alive or not?’ and tree identification

Image
Tigers went into the woods this afternoon to conduct some science investigations. Firstly, the children had to categorise things under the headings: Alive; Never Alive; Was Alive; Not Sure. The children had some great discussions, including whether fire and eggs were alive. The children then used an information sheet to help them to identify some of the trees in our woods by looking at the twigs and buds.

Planting seeds

Image
As part of our new topic, the children in Tigers and Bears planted seeds that we will be looking after this half term. We all planted cress seeds and the children then chose to plant either chives, basil or parsley. The children learnt that plants need light, water, food and air to grow.  We also planted some cress seeds for an experiment. We have planted 2 in soil. 1 will be watered but have no light and the other will get light but no water. We have planted 3 more on plates without soil. 1 is on wet cotton wool, 1 on wet paper towels and 1 in water. We will monitor these plants to see how each is affected.

Making board games

The children in Tigers class have been working hard to design and make their own board games. They have loved using their imagination to create something, and they particularly enjoyed making their own counters to play the games with.

Sorting toys

Image
This afternoon, Tigers received a message from the Toymaker to ask us to sort out his toy box. We had 2 hoops and the children suggested different ways of sorting the toys. When we found it tricky to sort a toy into one of the hoops, we overlapped them so that a toy could be in both hoops at once. Sometimes we found that our labels weren’t clear enough so people were sorting the toys in a different way than we thought. Together we established clearer rules for our groups so that sorting the toys was more successful and useful. For example, when sorting the toys into ‘old’ and ‘new’, we decided that ‘old’ would refer to the sort of toy that could have been played with 100 years ago.

Building bridges

After finding out lots of information about Tower Bridge this morning, the infants created their own bridges during forest schools this afternoon. They came up with different designs and thought carefully about how to make them.
